Bible verses for fear, for the night before
Twelve verses for when you are frightened of something specific, sorted by whether you need to be told you are not alone, told to move, or told whose you are.
Fear is more honest than anxiety. It usually knows what it is afraid of. The surgery is at seven. The court date is Monday. The test comes back this week. That specificity makes fear easier to pray about and harder to pray away, because the thing really is coming.
The Bible says do not be afraid more often than it says almost anything else, and it never says it to people who have nothing to fear. It says it to a man about to lead an army across a river, to exiles, to a girl who has just been told she will bear a child. The verses below are quoted word for word from the World English Bible and grouped by the three things a frightened person needs to hear: you are not alone, go anyway, and you are mine.
Each group ends with a prayer you could write down tonight, dated, so that you can find it again after the thing has happened and see what you were given.
You are not alone
Nearly every do not be afraid in scripture is followed by the same reason, and it is never that the danger is smaller than you think. It is presence. These four are the clearest.
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

A prayer to write
I am afraid of tomorrow and I do not want to pretend otherwise. You said you go before me. Go, then. Be in the room before I get there, and stay after I leave.

Some fear needs comfort. Some needs a push. These are the verses for the fear that has started to make decisions for you, the kind that keeps you from the phone call, the appointment, the conversation.
Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

It is a command, not a suggestion, and it is given to someone who has every reason to be afraid. Courage here is a thing you are told to do, not a thing you wait to feel.
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

I have been letting fear choose for me. I am going to make the call today. Give me the courage you commanded, not the courage I feel, and let that be enough.

The deepest answer to fear in scripture is not a promise about the outcome. It is a statement about who you belong to. These four verses say it in four different ways.

The hardest verse in this group, and worth sitting with. It does not say fear is wrong. It says love, when it is finished with you, will not leave room for it.
A prayer to write
Before the outcome, before the answer, I am yours. Say my name over me tonight. Let that settle something that the news tomorrow cannot unsettle.
Date the prayer, then come back to it
Fear has a short memory. The thing you dreaded happens or does not, and either way the dread evaporates, taking with it any record that you were carried. The next fear arrives and you face it as though you have never been through one.
Writing the prayer down, with a date, fixes that.
